The usual routine of doors unlocking and things being put into the mailbox started at about 6:00 a.m. Then the “douche” call came at 6:45 a.m. I got my clothes on and followed the guard, one I hadn’t seen before.
I walked in to find the shower area empty. The unit had three showers, each divided by a five-foot wall. I removed most of my clothes and reached over to push the button to start getting the shower up to temperature. The cubicle I chose was the first nearest the door, but before I had a chance to step into it, three other inmates walked in. I can remember thinking “one of them will have to wait” a split second before I realized what was going on. One guy stood at the door to keep an eye out while the other two pulled their towels from around their necks and, before I could say anything, one towel was around my face and upper body, held tight as my attacker twisted it. The second attacker got to the floor and wrapped his towel around my lower legs. It all happened in a split second. I didn’t have a chance. I was trying to shout out and kick loose, but they were holding me so tight I couldn’t move.
Questions were thrown at me. Who are you? Why are you here? What cell? Why was I in the secluded section?

I am six feet tall but two guards, both taller than me, escorted me to a small room and told me to strip naked.
I was left for ten minutes to do so. On returning, I was subjected to a two-man body search. Leaning up against a wall while having my “orifices” checked invasively was humiliating enough in itself without having the two men involved, adding their own style of humour. Then, instead of handing my clothes back, the guards removed them, and I was left there standing naked for what must have been at least a half hour. But it felt like longer – a lot longer. Already exhausted, now cold and standing on a cold stone floor with nowhere to sit, I was fit to break.
Eventually, the guards returned. I was handed back my clothes. Apparently, they had to be checked. I was also handed a bundle folded into a neat package that included a tray with cutlery, a piece of fruit, a piece of bread, and yogurt. I put down the bundle, ready to dress myself. “You can do that in the cell,” I was told sharply.
This amounted to more humiliation control, I thought.
I was walked through the length of the prison. In my fear and anxiety, that picture has stayed with me until this day. When I close my eyes, I see it vividly. It’s a culmination of all the prison films you have watched where a newcomer is walked through the center aisle to the sound of rowdy inmates banging cups on guard rails – the only difference being that all the cells were closed. By now, being about 10:00 p.m., it was fairly quiet, apart from the sound of rowdy inmates kicking doors or shouting.
